APPLYING FOR YOUR LICENSE
In order to get married in the State of New Jersey:
- Both partners must obtain a marriage license from the registrar in whatever municipality either applicant resides.
- This particular type of license is only valid for use within the state, so it cannot be taken out of New Jersey for any reason whatsoever.
- If the bride and groom are not residents of New Jersey, they must obtain a marriage license from the Registrar in the municipality where their elopement ceremony will be taking place.
- This license is only valid for ceremonies conducted in that particular municipality and cannot be used elsewhere.
- A New Jersey marriage license is only valid within the borders of the State of New Jersey, and any other state’s license cannot be used to enter into legally binding matrimony in this state.
- Furthermore, couples looking to obtain a New Jersey marriage license must pay a fee of $28.00 in order to make their union official.
Required Documentation:
- Proof of Identity (driver’s license, passport or state/federal ID)
- Proof of residency by one applicant, if a NJ resident
- Social Security number
- A witness, 18 years of age or older
- The $28 application fee
Additional information:
- There is a 72-hour waiting period before the license is issued.
- Remarriage does not require a 72-hour waiting period, but a certified copy of your existing marriage certificate is required.
- The license application is valid for six months from the date accepted.
