Historic Gardiner’s Basin

by | Aug 27, 2022 | Don't Miss Visiting | 0 comments

If you want to get away for a bit from the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk and casinos, just a skip and a hop away you’ll find Historic Gardiner’s Basin. Just follow New Hampshire Avenue to where it meets the bay and you’ll come across this waterfront delight that seems to take you back in time to a quieter more leisurely adventure away from the busy city. You can’t miss the entrance which is adorned with a statue of King Neptune. Parking is FREE!

Gardiner’s Basin is a back-bay waterfront area maritime village that’s the location of the Atlantic City Aquarium and many other and fun attractions.

This village has an interesting history that includes stories of whiskey and rum smuggling during prohibition. Old time whalers used to frequent the village and history tells of pirates leaving here headed for the Bahamas and Jamaica.

If you’re a clam lover it’s worthy to note that 70% of the clams sold in the entire United States are caught here!

WILL YOU BE NEEDING ANYTHING FROM AMAZON FOR YOUR VISIT?    Check out their “Deals of the Day”!   Maybe you’re in the market for some good walking shoes, a new camera, sunscreen or a nice hat to keep you from getting too much sun?   You want to be comfortable and prepared, right?  Amazon has some great travel essentials.  Check it out!

WELCOME

As you stroll through the area you’ll be surprised at how much there is to do. You’ll find a number of excellent restaurants and cafes, cruises such as back bay and deep-sea fishing and sightseeing, and some quaint eclectic stores to satisfy your shopping desires. Here you’ll also find the Artist’s colony. If you’re drawn to artists, crafters and antique shops you’ll love it!

If you’ll need to update your fishing gear, check these options out!  Maybe a travel case or fishing backpack?

When you’ve had enough shopping, sit and relax for a bit at a picnic table and enjoy the views and the fresh salty air. You can spend an hour or two walking around and experience this “other Atlantic City” that not everyone gets the chance to see. It’s a different view for sure.

The tour boats leave from here so look for signage, and you’ll also find spots to fish off the dock.

The original Diving Bell from the Atlantic City steel pier can be found here as well. If you have spent any of your childhood in Atlantic City as I have, this treasure brings back exciting memories!

Seasonally festivals, fairs and special events are held including a concert series in the amphitheater where every seat has a view of the bay.

Gardiner’s Basin is also home to a very large commercial fishing fleet.

RESTAURANTS

Back Bay Ale House is a very popular stop for those wishing to grab some food and drink and take a load off.  Their menu is large and diverse and includes seafood, of course.  Your options include shrimp, clam, mussels, crab cakes or fish and chips.  Or if you’re craving burgers, tacos, steak, chicken, soup or salad you’re in luck. There is also a children’s menu and a gift shop!

Another long-time Atlantic City favorite is Gilchrist Restaurant which has been serving breakfast and lunch here since 1946.  Located right on the water, they’re known for their comfortable, relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. Their blueberry pancakes are a must!

If you’re in the mood for live music and outdoor dining, look for Scale’s Deck and Bar. Here you’ll find casual dining and food truck options.  Again, delicious seafood is on the menu.

In Gardiner’s basin you’ll also find a seasonal ice cream shop, surf shop and a number of small crafty stores.

ATLANTIC CITY AQUARIUM

The Atlantic City Aquarium displays over 100 species of fish and incredible marine life including exotic species of live corals. You’ll be amazed by the Loggerhead Sea Turtles which are the most abundant sea turtles in the United States but are on the endangered animals list. This is a perfect place to spend a rainy day, or any day for that matter, with the family and a great learning experience for the kids. Find an AC Weekly paper for discount coupons.
